To convert PNG to SVG, drop your image into the box above, choose the number of colours and tap “Convert to SVG”. The tool traces the outlines and creates real vector shapes that stay sharp at any size. This works best for logos, icons, drawings and signatures. It runs on your device, with no server upload.

How to convert PNG to SVG

  1. Choose your image

Drag a PNG into the box above or tap “Choose images”. JPG and WebP work too. The sharper and larger the image, the cleaner the result.

  2. Choose the colours

“B/W” turns dark areas black and drops the light background, perfect for signatures, stamps and cutting machines. 8 or 16 colours suit logos, 64 suits detailed drawings.

  3. Convert

Tap “Convert to SVG”. Tracing takes a few seconds per image and runs on your device, so your images stay private.

  4. Save the SVG

One image downloads straight away, several come as a ZIP or one by one. Open the SVG in your design program, browser or cutting software.

When do you need this?

Cut files for Cricut and plotters

Cutting machines need outlines, not pixels. Convert a motif in black and white and load the SVG into Design Space or your plotter software.

Logo only available as a PNG

The printer or sign maker wants a vector file, but you only have a PNG from the website. For simple logos, tracing gives you a usable SVG.

Signature or stamp as a vector

Photograph or scan your signature on white paper. In black and white mode you get clean lines on a transparent background for documents and websites.

Icons and drawings for the web

Icons and illustrations as SVG stay sharp on every screen and can be recoloured with CSS. Ideal for web designers who only have pixel versions.

PNG vs. SVG: what's the difference?

PNG stores a grid of pixels. When you enlarge it, edges become blocky or blurry. SVG instead describes shapes as lines and curves, so it stays sharp at any size.

Converting PNG to SVG means tracing: the tool finds areas of the same colour and turns their outlines into curves. That works well for clear shapes and poorly for photos. If you need a pixel image from an SVG, go the other way with SVG to PNG.

Good to know

  • Which images work well?: Logos, icons, clip art, line drawings, text and signatures with clear edges and few colours. Blurry, small or heavily compressed images give rougher shapes.
  • Photos are not a good fit: A photo has millions of colour shades. As an SVG it becomes poster-like and the file can reach several megabytes. For photos, keep PNG or JPG.
  • Transparency stays: Transparent areas in your PNG remain transparent in the SVG. Semi-transparent edges are assigned to either the shape or the background, which gives clean outlines.
  • Size of the SVG: The SVG gets the same width and height as your image, but can be scaled freely. For tracing, the image is brought to about 1 megapixel: small images are enlarged for smoother curves, very large ones reduced so it stays fast.

Tip: Crop the image to the motif first and use the largest version you have. For cutting machines, “B/W” gives the fewest and cleanest shapes.

Honest note: Automatic tracing is no substitute for a logo redrawn by a designer. For simple logos it’s usually enough; for print-ready brand logos, have the original vector file sent to you if possible.

Troubleshooting

The edges look jagged or wobbly.

The source image is small or blurry. Use a larger version of the image, ideally at least 500 pixels wide, and convert again.

The SVG file is very large.

The image has many colours or fine details, as photos do. Choose fewer colours, for example 8 or B/W. For photos, PNG or JPG is the better format.

The colours are slightly different.

The tool reduces the image to the chosen number of colours and averages similar shades. Choose 64 colours if you need more nuance, or adjust the colours in your design program afterwards.

The white background is still there.

In colour mode the background is traced as a shape too. Choose “B/W” to drop it, or start from a PNG with a transparent background.

Cricut shows lots of layers.

Each colour becomes its own layer. Choose “B/W” or 8 colours, then you get one or a few layers that are easy to cut.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, on your own device. The file itself is never sent to a server, never stored and never seen by us. Close the tab and it is gone from memory.

You can check this yourself: open your browser's developer tools (F12), switch to the “Network” tab and start the conversion. Your file does not show up as an upload. What you may see are page resources and, if you agreed to them, ads or statistics.

FAQ

Is converting PNG to SVG on Filemanta free?

Yes, completely. There's no daily limit, no watermark and no account. You can convert as many images as you like.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The tracing runs in your browser on your own device. Your logos, drawings and signatures are never sent to a server.

Is the result a real vector file?

Yes. The SVG contains real paths made of lines and curves, not an embedded pixel image. You can scale it freely, edit it in design programs and use it for cutting machines.

Can I also convert JPG to SVG?

Yes. The tool also accepts JPG and WebP. Clear motifs work best, for example a logo or a drawing on a plain background.

Can I turn a photo into an SVG?

Technically yes, but the result looks like a poster and the file gets very large. Tracing is made for logos, icons and drawings.

Does the SVG work with Cricut?

Yes. Design Space imports SVG files, and each colour becomes a layer. For cut files, “B/W” mode is the best choice.

How long does it take?

Usually a few seconds per image. Large, colourful images take longer, because more shapes have to be traced.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, on iPhone and Android in all current browsers. Pick your image from Files or the gallery, convert, save. No app needed.
