How to Make a PDF a Picture on Mac, Windows and Your Phone

On a Mac, open the PDF in Preview and choose File > Export with the format JPEG. The catch: Preview only saves the page that’s currently open, Windows has no built-in way at all, and a screenshot comes out blurry.
With our free PDF to JPG converter every page becomes a sharp image in one go, all together as a ZIP, the same on Mac, Windows and phone. Try it now with your PDF.
Save PDF pages as JPG →Instagram won’t show a PDF, the portal only accepts JPG, or you want to text someone a page as a photo? Then you need to make your PDF a picture. On a Mac, Preview can do it, but only one page at a time. Windows can’t do it on its own at all. Here are all the methods, including the one that turns every page into a sharp image at once.
Which method is right for you?
| Method | All pages at once | Sharp | No installation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preview on a Mac | No, one page per export | Yes, resolution adjustable | Yes |
| Screenshot (PC and phone) | No | No, screen resolution | Yes |
| Browser with Filemanta | Yes, as a ZIP or separately | Yes, as PNG up to 300 dpi | Yes |
For a single page on a Mac, Preview is enough. For several pages, on Windows and on your phone, the browser method is faster and sharper.
How to save a PDF as a JPG on a Mac
Preview comes with every Mac and saves a PDF page as a JPG or PNG.
- Double-click the PDF to open it in Preview. If a different app opens, right-click the file and choose Open With > Preview.
- Go to the page you need as a picture.
- Choose File > Export.
- Set Format to JPEG or PNG. Under Resolution, enter 150 for the screen or 300 for printing.
- Click Save.
Preview only saves the page that’s currently open. If your PDF has ten pages, you repeat this ten times. For whole documents, the browser method below works better.
On Windows: no built-in way
Windows 11 and 10 can’t save a PDF as a picture. Paint and the Photos app don’t open PDFs, and Edge only displays them. The stopgap is a screenshot: press Windows + Shift + S, drag a frame around the page and save the image from the Snipping Tool.
The catch: a screenshot only has your screen’s resolution. Full pages often come out too small to read the text well, and it blurs in print. For more than one page, it’s also tedious.
All pages at once: in your browser
This method works the same everywhere: on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android. You don’t need an app or an account.
- Open PDF to JPG and drag your PDF into the box. All pages appear as previews.
- Choose JPG or PNG.
- Under Download, choose ZIP for all pages, or Separately if you only need certain pages.
- Tap Create images and download the pictures. They’re named after your PDF plus the page number.
Your PDF isn’t uploaded to any server. It’s read in your browser. That matters most for IDs, visa paperwork, bank statements and contracts. Many online converters upload files like these to their servers first.
How to make a PDF a picture on iPhone and Android
On your phone, the quickest way is a screenshot of the open page. For an Instagram story, that’s sometimes enough. For anything with small text, though, the picture comes out too rough, and margins or toolbars end up in it.
It’s sharper in the browser, exactly as described above, in Safari or Chrome:
- iPhone: The pictures land in the Files app, in the Downloads folder. To move one into the Photos app, open it, tap Share and choose Save Image.
- Android: The pictures land in the Download folder. Google Photos and Samsung Gallery show them in the Download folder or album.
To open a ZIP on iPhone, tap it once in the Files app. On Android, use the Files app or My Files. If you only need one or two pages, choose Separately and skip the ZIP.
JPG or PNG? And which resolution?
- JPG for photos, flyers and anything that goes to chats, social media or email. The files stay small.
- PNG for pages with lots of text, tables and lines. The letters stay crisp, the file gets bigger.
- 144 dpi is enough for screen, phone and presentations. That’s what PDF to JPG uses.
- 300 dpi for printing or portals that require high resolution. You get that with PDF to PNG, where you can also choose a transparent background.
Common reasons to do it
- Instagram and stories: Instagram doesn’t show PDFs. It crops portrait posts to 4:5, and a Letter or A4 page is narrower. Before posting, check that nothing important gets cut off at the top or bottom.
- An upload portal only accepts images: For a DMV, visa or rental application portal, convert only the page they ask for and watch the size limit. JPG is usually smaller than PNG.
- Show a page in Word or PowerPoint: Inserted as a picture, every page shows up visible and sharp. The guide How to add a PDF in Word as an image shows how.
- Preview image for a website or online shop: Save the first page of a catalog or flyer as a JPG.

FAQ
How do I save a PDF as a JPG on a Mac?
Open the PDF in Preview, go to the page you want and choose File > Export. Set the format to JPEG, choose the resolution and click Save. Preview only saves one page at a time this way. For all pages at once, use a browser converter.
How do I make a PDF a picture on Windows?
Windows has no built-in way to do this. Paint and the Photos app don't open PDFs. The easiest way is in your browser: drag the PDF into PDF to JPG, click Create images and download the pages as a ZIP. A screenshot is only a stopgap, since it only has screen resolution.
How do I turn a PDF with many pages into pictures?
In the browser tool, each page automatically becomes its own image. Download them all together as a ZIP, or save only the pages you need. The files are numbered, for example “invoice-page-1.jpg”, so the order stays clear.
Should I save a PDF as JPG or PNG?
JPG works for almost everything and makes small files, ideal for Instagram, texts and email. PNG is lossless and keeps small text, tables and lines especially sharp. For printing, or a government portal with strict requirements, use PNG at 300 dpi.
Why is my picture blurry?
Usually it's a screenshot. It only has your screen's resolution, so small text blurs when you zoom in or print. When you convert, the page is rendered fresh instead. At 144 dpi, a Letter page comes out at about 1224 × 1584 pixels, at 300 dpi about 2550 × 3300 pixels.
